Russian court sentences Abkhazian to over 5 years for posts praising Shamil Basaev

A Russian court has sentenced an Abkhazian man, Timur Agrba, to over five years in prison for sharing online posts praising Shamil Basaev. The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don convicted Agrba of justifying terrorism following charges related to ten Telegram posts published between September and December 2024. These posts, originating from his channel Apsny Akhintkara / Abkhazia, were critical of Russia’s policies and promoted closer ties between Abkhazia, Turkey, and Georgia.

Agrba’s detention in March 2025 by the FSB, without immediate identification, followed the reporting by Zhivaya Kuban. The controversy stemmed from an exhibition at a Sukhumi museum featuring a portrait of Shamil Basaev, prompting criticism from the Russian Embassy and a demand for its removal. The Abkhazian State Museum had displayed the image since 2012, with Russian financial assistance during its reconstruction.

Following public outcry via Telegram channels, including calls for intervention from the Russian Embassy, the museum moved the Basaev portrait to its archives. Shamil Basaev, a figure involved in the Chechen conflicts of the 1990s and early 2000s, was responsible for several terrorist attacks, including the Budyonnovsk hospital siege and the Dubrovka theatre centre attack. He was a prominent figure on international terrorist lists.

Prior to this, he fought alongside Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh and served in Abkhazia during the conflict, holding command positions. The court’s decision against Agrba is currently subject to appeal. This case highlights ongoing tensions between Abkhazia, Russia, and concerns surrounding the legacy of Shamil Basaev and related issues within the North Caucasus region.

The court’s ruling underscores the sensitivity surrounding this figure and the restrictions placed on expressing opinions about him.
