Putin awards Ramzan Kadyrov’s son Akhmat for achievements in ‘physical culture and sport’

Vladimir Putin awarded Akhmat Kadyrov, the son of Chechen Head Ramzan Kadyrov, with a presidential commendation recognizing his contributions to ‘physical culture and sport,’ alongside many years of dedicated service. This recognition came on March 30th, following an order signed by Putin, published on the official legal information portal. Akhmat Kadyrov currently holds several key positions, including deputy chairperson of the Chechen government and minister for physical culture and sport.

He was appointed to the minister role in November 2023 and subsequently became deputy prime minister of the republic overseeing education in January 2026. Despite lacking formal higher education qualifications, as confirmed by official records, Kadyrov’s career began at a young age. He previously headed a youth movement branch at 16 and was appointed First Deputy Minister of Sport at 17.

The awarding of these positions before completing his university studies raises questions about the requirements for holding senior state roles in Russia. Akhmat Kadyrov received the Nikolai Ozerov medal in February 2026, recognized for his personal achievements in sports, alongside other accolades including the ‘100 Years of Kyrgyz Sport’ medal presented by a delegation from Kyrgyzstan. Furthermore, Ramzan Kadyrov and numerous family members, including Akhmat, have accumulated over 146 awards and titles since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, as reported by independent media.

Putin and Kadyrov exchanged awards, with Akhmat receiving the ‘In memory of Akhmat-Hadzhi Kadyrov’ medal, honoring his grandfather, the first president of the Chechen Republic. This demonstrates the continued support and recognition within the system for figures associated with the Kadyrov family.
