‘Patriots for Europe in Congress’ group formed in Strasbourg, joined by Georgia’s ruling party

At the 50th plenary session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, a new political group, “Patriots for Europe in Congress,” was established. This group unites representatives from six nations – Georgia (represented by the Georgian Dream party), Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Spain. Anna Magyar, representing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, leads the group, with Nino Vardosanidze of the Georgian delegation and Richard Vereš of the Czech Republic serving as vice-presidents.

Comprising 29 delegates from diverse political structures, the group emphasizes sovereignty as its central theme. The “Patriots for Europe in Congress” aims to strengthen cooperation among patriotic and sovereigntist politicians, particularly concerning national security. They intend to provide alternative political viewpoints on issues such as migration, security, and the role of the state in international affairs, aligning with currents within European right-wing parties.

The group’s “Patriotic Manifesto” advocates for national sovereignty over federalism, freedom over directives, and peace over war, alongside border protection and combating illegal migration. This new “Patriots for Europe in Congress” group is linked to the existing “Patriots for Europe” alliance in the European Parliament, functioning as its “younger brother.” Formed in 2024 with Fidesz, the Freedom Party, and ANO, the alliance shares similar values and key slogans: prioritizing national sovereignty, skepticism towards further EU federalization, and a firm stance on migration. The group is perceived as having a favorable attitude towards Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin.

The participation of Georgian Dream in this congress group follows several years outside established european political families. This move reflects a potential shift towards prioritizing sovereignty and national interests. The formation of this group within the Council of Europe congress underscores a broader trend of consolidating sovereigntist and nationalist forces across europe.
