In Abkhazia, archaeologists uncover I–IV century fortress linked to Roman Empire. Video

Abkhazia, 17.03.2026 – Significant archaeological findings are emerging in Abkhazia, specifically a first to fourth century fortress intrinsically linked to the Roman Empire. This ancient fortification represents the sole surviving structure from antiquity. Abkhaz archaeologists, supported by numerous volunteers, are currently engaged in extensive excavations along Sukhum’s embankment, within the Dioscurias area.

Historians previously recognized the existence of the ancient city, Sebastopolis, and are now witnessing its remains for the first time. The original Roman walls were concealed beneath the embankment, and access remained restricted. Limited research occurred during the Soviet period (1958-1962) focused primarily on waterfront development, without fully appreciating the discovery.

The team intends to excavate and expose two towers connected by a wall, alongside two additional towers and sections of the defensive walls that have been lost to the sea. Red-slip pottery is frequently unearthed, but coins are considered the most crucial finds. Over twenty coins have already been recovered, and specialists will meticulously remove the patina and analyze them.

Increased coin discoveries will illuminate Sebastopolis’s connections to other regions of the Roman Empire and its role in ancient trade. Local researchers emphasize the scientific and political importance of this area, recognizing it as one of Abkhazia’s oldest and continuously inhabited locations. Completion of the excavations and reconstruction is anticipated by the summer season.
