Georgian government adds another party to list of those facing ban

Georgian Government Expands List of Parties Facing Potential Ban

Tbilisi – The Georgian government intends to pursue a new legal challenge before the Constitutional Court, seeking to ban several political parties, including the recently added Federalists. The move follows a previous application and expands the list of opposition groups under review. Parliamentary committee members from the ruling Georgian Dream party have confirmed the validity of signatures on the updated constitutional lawsuit, signed by 89 members of parliament.

The government’s action is linked to a declaration issued by an opposition alliance on March 2, 2026, and is being assessed in relation to the influence of key figures such as former President Mikheil Saakashvili, Giga Bokoria, and Nika Gvaramia. Initially, the lawsuit targeted the United National Movement, the Coalition for Change, and Lelo. The updated claim now includes the Federalists party.

The ruling party states this adjustment is intended to broaden the scope of the legal challenge. Congressman Joe Wilson, in an interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, emphasized the importance of free and fair elections for the Georgian people. Reactions to the potential ban have been mixed.

Tamar Chergoleishvili, a leader of the Federalists party, stated that a ban would not alter their political strategy. She argues the move is primarily procedural, aimed at resetting the timeline for the Constitutional Court’s consideration. Chergoleishvili asserted that the Federalists will continue to operate independently, viewing the government’s actions as a sign of weakness and a tactic to delay a broader crackdown.

The opposition coalition plans to utilize protest actions and international pressure to achieve concessions and ultimately establish a democratic government. The Georgian government previously sought to ban three opposition parties, collectively receiving 49% of the vote in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
