Azerbaijan arrests another opposition Popular Front Party member

Azerbaijan has detained Jeyhun Novruzov, the head of the Popular Front Party’s local branch in Sabail, on accusations of minor offenses and failing to comply with police instructions. A court imposed a 25-day administrative sentence on him following a ruling on March 13th. A representative from the Popular Front Party stated that novruzov, aged 43, has a pre-existing heart condition.

He was apprehended while traveling to a hospital for treatment related to his heart health. The party indicated that novruzov had undergone stent placement in October 2025 and was experiencing discomfort during his court appearance on Friday. According to the Popular Front Party, novruzov previously used social media to criticize traffic police officers for issuing unwarranted fines and demanded action against them.

Novruzov was previously arrested in December 2024 for disregarding police orders, receiving a 10-day detention sentence. He has consistently refuted these charges. Azerbaijan has made numerous arrests of opposition Popular Front Party members throughout the year, including Ali Karimli in November 2025, accused of collaborating with former presidential aide Ramiz Mehdiyev to destabilize the government.

Azerbaijan is releasing recordings suggesting further involvement of individuals with Mehdiyev in a coup plot, alleging foreign influence. The State Security Service is presenting evidence of additional conspirators. The Popular Front Party continues to operate within the context of ongoing restrictions in azerbaijan.
