Chechen Activists Report Further Abductions in Republic

Grozny – The Chechen opposition movement, NIYSO, has reported the abduction of at least six residents of the Sheikh Iznaur settlement in Grozny, formerly known as Prigorodnoe. The movement alleges these abductions are part of a systematic pattern of disappearances, with individuals, including elderly residents, being held in undisclosed locations. NIYSO claims that those abducted are subjected to torture and that the Federal Security Service (FSB) is aware of these activities.

The movement regularly documents alleged human rights violations, including unlawful detentions and pressure on relatives of suspected individuals. NIYSO was designated an “extremist organization” by the Supreme Court of Chechnya in autumn 2025, a decision the court did not fully explain. The movement’s activities, which focus on reporting abductions and criticizing Chechen authorities, have drawn responses from officials.

Director of Grozny TV, Chingiz Akhmadov, stated that individuals associated with NIYSO, reportedly operating from Turkey and European countries, are wanted on criminal charges, including recruiting young people for alleged terrorist purposes. Reports of abductions in Chechnya, frequently documented by human rights organizations like Memorial, have been a recurring issue. In April 2025, NIYSO reported the abduction of 17 teenagers from Beno-Yurt, citing concerns about their involvement in a Telegram chat.

Previous incidents include mass detentions in Sernovodskoe and Engal-Yurt, often linked to incidents involving the burning of symbols associated with Chechen Head Ramzan Kadyrov. These reports highlight ongoing concerns about the treatment of residents and the role of activists in documenting alleged abuses within the Chechen region. The whereabouts of those abducted remain unknown.
