Abkhazia’s Prosecutor General’s Office accused of leaking information to anonymous media

Abkhazia Prosecutor’s Office Under Scrutiny Following Information Leak

Sukhum – Abkhazia’s Prosecutor General’s Office is facing scrutiny following accusations of leaking information to anonymous social media channels. The allegations surfaced during a parliamentary committee meeting concerning a request to strip opposition leader Kan Kvarchia of his parliamentary immunity. Kvarchia stated that pro-government Telegram channels had prematurely disclosed details of the document, the committee’s submission date, and the hearing schedule – information not yet available to parliamentary deputies.

This occurred as Adgur Agrba, the Prosecutor General, was present at the committee meeting. Agrba has vehemently denied any involvement, claiming the channels have made personal insults. However, opposition outlet Abkhaz Portal argues the incident demonstrates a direct link between state bodies and these channels, suggesting coordinated disinformation campaigns targeting Abkhaz citizens.

The outlet asserts that even if Agrba wasn’t directly involved, his discussion of the session date indicates knowledge of the channels’ activities. Kvarchia is currently facing criminal charges related to alleged involvement with Russian political consultants operating illegally in Abkhazia. The opposition continues to accuse authorities of collaborating with anonymous social media that frequently disparages opposition figures.

Despite evidence of leaks, no formal investigation has been launched. The incident raises concerns about potential misconduct within the prosecutor’s office and calls for a thorough investigation to determine the extent of the leak and any potential involvement of senior officials. The final decision regarding Kvarchia’s immunity rests with the parliament.
