Moldovan parliamentary delegation including former controversial former President Igor Dodon visits Georgia

A Moldovan parliamentary delegation, led by a pro-Russian lawmaker Bogdan (Bogdat) Țîrdea, recently visited Tbilisi. The group included former Moldovan President Igor Dodon, a leader of the Party of Socialists (PSRM), alongside other members representing the country’s opposition. This visit, occurring on April 2, 2026, was facilitated by the Moldovan Parliament’s friendship group with Georgia and aimed to strengthen cooperation and explore new opportunities at the parliamentary level.

Igor Dodon, a key figure in the former moldovan government, stated the visit was at the invitation of the Georgian side, emphasizing the desire to bolster ties between Moldova and Georgia. During the meeting, representatives from both the Georgian Dream and PSRM parties engaged, including Isko Daseni and Mariam Lashkhi from Georgian Dream, alongside members of the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), who support Moldova’s European integration. The delegation also comprised Vasile Costiuc, leader of the Democracy at Home (PPDA) party, and other members from the Alternative Bloc.

Dodon’s itinerary included a planned meeting with Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili and representatives from all parliamentary factions. The friendship group itself includes members from both the ruling and opposition parties within the moldovan parliament. Valeriu Pașa, chairman of Watchdog.md, expressed concern about Georgia’s alignment with Russian influence, criticizing the invitation of a “Russian [conservatives]” delegation led by Țîrdea.

This situation reflects ongoing tensions between Moldova and Georgia, particularly concerning differing political orientations and relationships with the European Union. Sandu’s criticisms of local authorities and support for the anti-government movement have further complicated the situation, while Georgian Dream maintains its stance on safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.
