The increasing trend in Armenia is the departure of experienced journalists from their profession. We investigated the reasons behind this shift, speaking directly with those involved. Several have transitioned to new careers, while others continue their search.

Here are three accounts of former journalists. Anna Satyan, formerly a journalist with 23 years of experience, now dreams of opening a unique restaurant. “Journalism is not just a job; it’s a way of life,” she explains.

“The profession’s rhythm becomes addictive, but eventually, you realize you no longer want to write, yearning for something different.” Satyan’s career included roles at Novoye Vremya and news.am, alongside teaching at the Russian-Armenian University. She cites several factors contributing to her resignation, including the 2020 war, a severe coronavirus case, a sense of unease, declining intellectual standards, and a lack of fulfilling work. She expressed a desire to escape the relentless pace and meaningless nature of her previous role.

Satyan now studies at the Yeremyan Projects Academy of Culinary Arts and Hospitality, believing a deep understanding of kitchens is essential. “Cooking is chemistry,” she notes, finding relaxation in tasks like cutting carrots. She’s developing a restaurant business plan and menu, acknowledging the significant investment required.

Kristine Khanumyan, a journalist, shifted to creating embroidered artworks and bags, influenced by her family’s weaving and fashion design heritage. The blockade of Artsakh triggered her departure from journalism, leading her to embrace embroidery as a means of expression. These stories highlight the complex reasons why journalists are leaving the profession, including personal hardship, disillusionment with the media landscape, and a desire for new paths.
