Chechen officials threaten to force those caught with tinted car windows to fight in Ukraine

Chechen authorities are issuing stark warnings, threatening to compel individuals with tinted car windows to participate in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Magomed Muzaev, the head of the Duba-Yurt administration in Chechnya, voiced these demands in a recently released audio recording. The recording, obtained and circulated by the Chechen opposition movement NIYSO, reveals Muzaev urging local men to cease tinting their windshields, proposing they instead “help those in Ukraine.” He stated that those permitted to have tinted windows possess specific license plates and documentation.

Muzaev further explained that he intentionally released the message in a single, isolated format, hoping to prevent it from being disseminated by “scoundrels.” Regulations in Russia govern car window tinting, requiring at least 70% light transmission through windshields and front side windows. Exceptions exist for rare windows, up to 5% tint, if equipped with side mirrors. Violations of these standards can result in fines of ₽500 ($6) or administrative detention.

This situation unfolds amidst broader concerns regarding Chechnya’s involvement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with individuals being threatened to fight. The Daghestani National Policy Minister has reportedly vanished following reports of an assassination attempt. Gunef Yedic continues to research memory, identity, and imperial legacies in the North Caucasus, focusing on Circassian history and diaspora.
