TRIPP: Will a transport link between Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan be realised?

Azerbaijan-Armenia TRIPP Project Faces Geopolitical and Financial Challenges

Baku, Azerbaijan – The “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP) initiative, designed to facilitate transport links between Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan via Armenia, continues to generate debate and scrutiny. Launched in 2025 with a joint statement from Washington, the project aims to overcome longstanding transport and political blockades in the South Caucasus. However, its progress is complicated by security concerns and financing hurdles, particularly amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States.

Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the country’s entry into the project’s implementation phase in April 2026, emphasizing regional communications as a priority. The project, supported by a US-Armenia executive framework, envisions “unimpeded connectivity” while preserving Armenia’s sovereignty. Despite initial momentum, analysts, including Thomas de Waal of Carnegie Europe, highlight ongoing security risks.

The route’s proximity to the Armenian-Iranian border presents challenges for US personnel involvement, and financing remains a key obstacle, with initial funding of approximately $400 million. Recent incidents, including a drone strike on Nakhchivan airport and US travel advisories, have underscored these vulnerabilities. Furthermore, Iran’s position remains ambiguous, with differing viewpoints between its security and economic blocs.

While some factions view the project as a “Turkic” corridor, others see potential benefits in a railway connecting Iran with the South Caucasus. The ambitious goal of completing the railway by the end of Donald Trump’s second term (2028) remains a political objective for Azerbaijan, Armenia, and the United States, framed as a measurable package of infrastructure and business solutions. The project’s success hinges on sustained political will and access to financial resources, presenting significant challenges in the current geopolitical landscape.
