Georgian Dream Expands Constitutional Lawsuit to Include Federalists Party
Tbilisi – The ruling Georgian Dream party has announced it will broaden its constitutional lawsuit against opposition parties, now including the Federalists party. Parliamentary Speaker Shalva Papuashvili revealed on Monday that the party will submit a revised case to the Constitutional Court encompassing the Federalists alongside previously targeted parties: Ahali, the United National Movement (UNM), and Lelo. The initial lawsuit, filed in October 2025, sought to ban the three opposition parties following the disputed 2024 parliamentary elections, which were marked by significant irregularities.
Georgian Dream has repeatedly accused the UNM of undermining national interests and argued that numerous opposition parties are linked to the UNM. The Federalists party, founded in 2024 by former National Security Council Secretary Giga Bokeria and his wife, Tamar Chergoleishvili, was recently formed. Amidst growing opposition alliance formation, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze suggested extending the potential ban.
Papuashvili stated that the alliance’s founding declaration, signed by figures like Mikheil Saakashvili and Nika Gvaramia, represents an embrace of strategic objectives previously associated with the targeted parties. Georgian Dream alleges the alliance intends to “delegitimise” the elections and obstruct constitutional bodies. The party cited the 4 October protests as a key factor in its decision.
Tamar Chergoleishvili, leader of the Federalists, responded, stating that nothing changes for the party, and that they will not participate in any formal political process if any party is banned. She criticized the move as a demonstration of the regime’s weakness. Georgian Dream initially stated smaller parties lacked significant influence but reserved the right to revisit their constitutionality if they gained substantial political power.
The formation of the nine-party opposition alliance, which includes a non-recognition of the current government, has fueled the Georgian government’s efforts to restrict political opposition. The keywords: Georgian, Federalists, party are included within the text.
