Georgian opposition figure Elene Khoshtaria sentenced to 18 months in prison

Elene Khoshtaria, a prominent Georgian opposition figure, received a 18-month prison sentence following a court decision. The Tbilisi City Court, presided over by Judge Giorgi Arevadze, found her guilty of defacing an election poster for Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze with a marker. The verdict was based on televised evidence and testimony from a security officer involved in the case.

Elene Khoshtaria was not present at the hearing and maintains her innocence, asserting she committed no wrongdoing. She was initially detained on September 15, 2025, after failing to meet a 5,000 lari bail set by the court as a preventative measure. The charges stemmed from an incident on September 14, 2025, where she wrote “Russian Dream” on a banner near Kaladze’s campaign office.

This action followed a similar arrest and subsequent release of activist Megi Diasamidze. Prosecutors accused Elene Khoshtaria under Article 187 of the Georgian Criminal Code, relating to damaging property with significant consequences, carrying a potential sentence of one to five years. The European Parliament has expressed serious concern, adopting a resolution demanding the immediate release of all individuals detained for political reasons.

This resolution, titled “The case of Elene Khoshtaria and political prisoners under the Georgian Dream regime,” highlights what the European Parliament views as systematic persecution of political opponents, journalists, and activists by the Georgian Dream authorities. The resolution passed with 438 votes to 37, calling for Elene Khoshtaria’s release and the release of others detained for political reasons related to recent protests.
