Georgian minor faces criminal charges for making ‘false bomb reports’ during Patriarch’s funeral

A young Georgian individual is facing criminal accusations following the reporting of fabricated bomb threats during the funeral of Patriarch Ilia II. The Georgian State Security Service (SSG) confirmed that a deceptive report concerning explosives at the Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba) was made on the day of the service. A juvenile suspect is now being prosecuted.

According to the SSG, two unidentified calls were placed to the Interior Ministry on Sunday at 14:30, coinciding with the ongoing service and a substantial congregation at Sameba. The caller falsely claimed to be armed and positioned near the cathedral, asserting they had planted explosives and threatened an imminent detonation if evacuation didn’t occur within twenty minutes. The agency noted the individual attempted to conceal their identity using voice alteration software, a virtual phone number from abroad, and a hidden internet address.

Despite these efforts, authorities successfully identified the young person, who has confessed to the offense. Seized evidence includes multiple mobile phones, laptops, and other pertinent items related to the investigation. This charge of disseminating a false report about terrorism carries a potential prison sentence of three to six years.

The SSG emphasized its technological resources for detecting similar criminal activities and vowed a firm legal response in each case. The deceased Patriarch Ilia II, who served as Catholicos-Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church since 1977, was laid to rest on March 22nd following his passing on March 17th. The Georgian State Security Service continues to monitor such incidents.
