Following the death of Ilia II, the Georgian Orthodox Church is entering a transitional period, marking the beginning of a process to elect a new patriarch within the next two months. This shift represents a move from a system largely defined by a single figure for nearly 50 years towards collective decision-making. The Georgian Church must now select a new patriarch, though the process is formally regulated and complex.
Currently, Metropolitan Shio Mujiri of Senaki and Chkhorotsku leads the Church, a role established in 2017 following Ilia II’s appointment as locum tenens. This arrangement isn’t a temporary measure but a pre-existing mechanism, testing the unity of the Church’s internal structure. The election process involves two stages.
Initially, the Holy Synod, comprising 39 hierarchs, nominates candidates through a secret ballot, selecting the top three. Subsequently, a broader vote, including representatives from dioceses, monasteries, and theological schools, determines the final candidate. Only members of the Holy Synod have voting rights, ensuring the final decision rests with this group.
A candidate needing at least 20 votes will be elected patriarch; otherwise, a second round will occur between the leading contenders. The entire process is time-bound, commencing 40 days after the patriarch’s death and concluding no later than two months. The enthronement will traditionally take place at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.
The criteria for a new patriarch are strictly defined: ethnic Georgian, serving bishop, theological education, monastic status, age between 40 and 70, and experience in Church administration. Metropolitan Shio Mujiri of Senaki and Chkhorotsku is currently considered the most likely candidate, reportedly backed by the ruling Georgian Dream party. Shio Mujiri, formerly Elizbar Mujiri, is 57 and has a background in music and extensive experience within the Georgian Orthodox Church, including leadership roles in multiple dioceses and oversees parishes in Australia and New Zealand.
The election of a new patriarch in georgia will be a significant event, shaping the future of the church.
