Georgia Announces Cabinet Reshuffle, Creates New Security Ministry Post
Tbilisi, Georgia – Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced a significant cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday, including the appointment of Mamuka Mdinaradze as Deputy Prime Minister and the creation of a new ministerial position focused on the Coordination of Law Enforcement Agencies. Interior Minister Gela Geladze will transition to head the State Security Service (SSG), while Sulkhan Tamazashvili will replace him as Interior Minister. The changes, announced at a briefing alongside Mdinaradze and Geladze, aim to improve coordination between law enforcement agencies.
Kobakhidze stated the reshuffle was not driven by specific issues and intended to strengthen the ruling Georgian Dream party’s political team. Mdinaradze, previously the State Security Service (SSG) chief since September 2025, will now oversee the new coordination ministry. Sulkhan Tamazashvili, who has led the Autonomous Government of Adjara since April 2025, will take over as Interior Minister.
Tamazashvili previously served as Director of the Tbilisi Police Department from 2021 to 2025, and prior to that, headed police forces in several regions of Georgia. The government highlighted achievements in combating organized and drug-related crimes, as well as improvements in governance in Adjara. Kobakhidze thanked Geladze, Mdinaradze, and Tamazashvili for their service.
Recent arrests of former high-ranking Georgian Dream officials on corruption charges, including former Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili, have been framed by authorities as part of an anti-corruption campaign. The proposed changes will be submitted to parliament for approval, including the appointment of a new SSG head and the creation of the new ministry. The move follows a period of scrutiny regarding the asset declarations of Mdinaradze, the former head of the SSG.
