‘Georgia at crossroads’: EU envoy’s remarks spark strong reaction in Tbilisi

EU Ambassador’s Comments Trigger Strong Reaction in Tbilisi

Brussels – Remarks made by EU ambassador Pawel Herczynski regarding Georgia’s future have prompted a significant response from the Georgian government. Herczynski stated that Georgia “stands at a crossroads,” with its trajectory dependent on decisions made in the coming months, potentially determining its alignment with European values or a return to past challenges. Speaking at an exhibition in Brussels, Herczynski emphasized the importance of supporting the Georgian people and urged them not to lose hope, warning against a return to “dark times of violence, civil war, poverty, hardship and corruption.” He indicated that EU support would be contingent on Georgia’s willingness to cooperate and pursue membership within the European Union.

The Georgian government reacted forcefully, with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze deeming Herczynski’s comments a “threat of civil war and impoverishment.” Kobakhidze proposed summoning the ambassador to the foreign ministry, asserting that the remarks were “unthinkable” and violated diplomatic norms. Kakha Kaladze echoed this sentiment, characterizing the ambassador’s language as a “threat to the state and society,” highlighting Georgia’s sovereignty and desire for partnerships, not “masters.”

Ruling party officials, including Irakli Kirtskhalia, linked the ambassador’s statements to concerns about external influence, specifically referencing the “deep state,” and emphasized Georgia’s aspirations to join the European Union. The situation remains a point of contention between Georgia and the European Union, with both sides asserting their respective positions regarding the country’s future.

  1. “It’s concerning to hear such direct statements about Georgia’s future, especially without further context.”
