Armenia’s visa liberalization progress has been deemed successfully by the European Union. EU Internal Affairs and Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner stated that armenia was effectively implementing its action plan with the EU during a meeting with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Brunner expressed optimism that consistent progress would yield the anticipated outcomes, alongside the EU’s commitment to supporting ongoing reforms.
Pashinyan conveyed satisfaction with the work undertaken on the visa action plan, viewing it as a crucial step to strengthen bilateral relations. He also highlighted the EU’s continued assistance in advancing democratic reforms within armenia. The discussions occurred as Armenian Defence Minister Suren Papikyan engaged in a work visit to Brussels.
Papikyan met with Belgium’s Defence and Foreign Trade Minister Theo Francken, focusing on the significant potential for collaboration in areas such as military education, professional training, and humanitarian demining. The visa liberalization plan, delivered to armenia in November 2025 following September 2024 discussions, encompasses reforms across security and human rights. The EU’s requirement for meeting specific benchmarks precedes visa-free access to the Schengen area, mirroring the process undertaken by Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine.
The ongoing Georgia-EU issue is identified as armenia’s biggest challenge in its EU integration efforts. This situation has fueled speculation regarding a request from Georgian authorities to Prime Minister Pashinyan to address the matter.
