The Adygea court imposed a substantial fine on a resident for an offensive act involving a mosque. A man from Anapa was penalized ₽50,000 ($620) following the September 2025 incident where he displayed a pig’s head on the fence of a mosque in the village of Kozet, Adygea. This decision represents a significantly reduced punishment compared to the potential maximum of ₽500,000 ($6,200) or imprisonment.
Initially, the Magistrate’s Court in the Takhtamukay district ordered a fine of ₽60,000 ($750), but this was lowered due to the time the individual spent in custody. The offense concerned the deliberate insulting of religious beliefs. The 43-year-old man was apprehended in Anapa, approximately 157 kilometers from Kozet, after the act.
Surveillance footage revealed the man approaching the mosque at night, placing the pig’s head, filming the scene with his phone, and then fleeing. He was overheard stating “Russia for Russians.” Kozet, a village with a population of 3,400, including Muslim Circassians, Russians, and Armenians, according to 2024 figures, is located within Adygea. Circassians, the indigenous people of Adygea, comprise roughly 20% of the republic’s population, while Muslims account for 27% – predominantly Circassian.
Some commentators suggested the incident might be linked to foreign interference. The court’s ruling highlights a sensitive situation within Adygea.
