Dagestan Court Sentences Two for 2018 Murder of 8-Year-Old Kalimat Omarova

Kalimat Omarova, an eight-year-old girl, was sentenced following her abduction and murder in Kaspiysk, Dagestan, in 2018. Magomed Mirzalibagandov, 42, has been given a life sentence, while Zaira Alieva, a family acquaintance, received a 12-year prison term. The court’s decision concluded a lengthy investigation into the tragic events.

In July 2018, Kalimat Omarova disappeared while fulfilling a simple errand – buying bread for her family. According to reports, she left her home at her mother’s request and was last heard from shortly after, with her father receiving a call indicating her unusual voice. Subsequent attempts to reach her by phone proved unsuccessful.

The investigation revealed that Mirzalibagandov and Alieva conspired to abduct Omarova for ransom, exploiting the family’s limited financial resources and the relative wealth of distant relatives. Mirzalibagandov held the child captive in a rented flat near the shop where she was initially sent. After four days, a ransom demand of 2 million rubles ($26,000) was presented, riddled with spelling errors.

Investigators initially considered multiple theories, including accidental disappearance, a ransom plot, or sexual violence. Mirzalibagandov ultimately confessed to repeatedly raping and murdering Omarova, concealing the crime by disposing of her body in a drainage ditch. A massive search effort, involving thousands of volunteers from across Russia and even Chechnya, ultimately located Omarova’s remains 42 days later.

The discovery, made by boys searching for a football, was devastating. The case was significantly advanced by molecular genetic analysis, which linked biological traces to Mirzalibagandov, leading to his confession and conviction under charges including abduction, rape, violent sexual acts, and murder. The year of the crime remains a painful reminder of this tragic event.

The case highlighted concerns regarding children’s rights and security in Dagestan.
