Baku sentences Russian national detained at height of Azerbaijan–Russia tensions

Azerbaijan Sentences Russian National on Money Laundering Charges

By Aytan Farhadova

Azerbaijan has sentenced Russian national Aleksandr Vaisero to four years in prison following a conviction on charges of laundering approximately ₼700,000 (approximately $420,000). The 36-year-old IT specialist was detained alongside other Russian citizens in June 2025, coinciding with heightened diplomatic tensions between Azerbaijan and Russia. The Baku Court of Grave Crimes delivered the verdict on Wednesday.

The prosecution alleged that Vaisero concealed the origin of his income, which stemmed from online gambling operations outside of Azerbaijan. During his court appearance, Vaisero maintained his innocence, asserting that his visit to Azerbaijan was purely for tourism. Alongside Vaisero, other Russian nationals were detained and charged with drug trafficking, potentially facing up to 12 years in prison.

All detainees have denied the accusations, attributing their arrest to deteriorating relations between Azerbaijan and Russia. The situation is rooted in several factors, including the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines plane in December 2024, which resulted in 38 fatalities, and subsequent compensation agreements between Russia and Azerbaijan. Prior to the plane crash, law enforcement actions targeting ethnic Azerbaijanis in Russia, including raids and resulting fatalities, further strained relations.

As a result, Azerbaijani authorities detained numerous Russian nationals, including Vaisero. Recently, Shahin Shikhlinski, a former head of the Azerbaijan diaspora in Ural Russia, received a total sentence of 24 years for violence against a government official, highlighting the ongoing complexities within the Russia-Azerbaijan relationship. The case involved a Russian citizen detained in Azerbaijan.
