Georgian Citizen Detained on Espionage Charges

Tbilisi, Georgia – The Georgian State Security Service (SSG) Counterintelligence Department has detained one Georgian citizen on suspicion of espionage activities. The individual is accused of collecting and transmitting information on behalf of a foreign intelligence service, posing a risk to Georgia’s national interests. According to the SSG, two additional Georgian citizens are implicated in similar offenses and are currently located abroad.

Formal charges will be filed against them in absentia, and they will be added to Interpol’s international wanted list. The investigation revealed the detained individual was recruited by a foreign intelligence service, assigned a code name, and tasked with gathering data. This included information regarding Georgian law enforcement structures – specifically the State Security Service, Ministry of Internal Affairs, and Ministry of Defense – alongside photographic and video documentation of these facilities.

The scope of the operation also extended to strategically important infrastructure, such as bridges, highways, and railways, along with associated data and visual materials. Two other Georgian citizens, recruited by the same foreign intelligence service, received similar assignments. The SSG reports that the investigation spanned a significant period due to the nature of the case.

The agency declined to identify the specific foreign intelligence service involved. The detained individual has been formally charged under Part 1 of Article 314 of the Georgian Criminal Code, carrying a potential prison sentence of eight to twelve years. Charges will also be brought in absentia against the two other wanted individuals.

This case highlights ongoing security concerns within Georgia.
