‘Georgia is a frontline in global fight against dictatorships’ — Interview with Congressman Joe Wilson

Georgia Remains ‘Frontline’ in Global Fight, Congressman Wilson Says

Tbilisi, Georgia – US Republican Congressman Joe Wilson has asserted that Georgia remains a strategically vital country within the South Caucasus, increasingly positioned as a frontline in the global struggle against authoritarian regimes. In an exclusive Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty interview, Wilson emphasized the importance of democratic processes and the need for “genuinely free and fair elections” for the Georgian people. Wilson cited his personal connection to Georgia, highlighting his admiration for the nation’s citizens and the courage of Georgian soldiers with whom his sons served alongside.

He stated, “The Georgian people deserve recognition and, most importantly, genuinely free and fair elections.”

The congressman expressed concern over growing geopolitical competition, particularly the increasing influence of Russia and China in the region. He specifically highlighted the strategic significance of the Anaklia deep-sea port, viewing it as a critical infrastructure project susceptible to Chinese influence, linked to the transport of rare minerals from Central Asia. Wilson raised security concerns regarding potential cooperation between Georgia and Iran, citing reports of intelligence sharing amid Iran’s human rights record.

He underscored the importance of maintaining open access to the Anaklia port and preventing its control by Beijing. “Georgia sits at a strategic crossroads,” Wilson stated. He also noted a broader trend towards strengthening democratic processes globally, referencing the weakening influence of Russia in countries like Moldova and Armenia.

Wilson’s position reflects a broader US strategy of “peace through strength” and the need for international coalitions to counter authoritarianism, as evidenced by initiatives like the “Countering Chinese Control in the Caucasus Act.”
