Black Sea Petroleum (BSP), the operator of the Kulevi oil refinery in Georgia, is focused on transitioning away from utilizing Russian crude. Davit Potskhveria, co-founder and CEO of the company, detailed this shift during an interview with Business Media Georgia. Initially, BSP processed oil sourced from Russia, but now the firm is aggressively expanding its range of raw materials.
This strategic diversification is intended to unlock access to the European Union market. Currently, the EU restricts imports of products derived from Russian oil. Potskhveria emphasized that the adoption of alternative materials will circumvent these limitations.
A significant hurdle for BSP involves the transportation of oil from Turkmenistan via rail, passing through Azerbaijan. “Regrettably,” Potskhveria stated, “the oil transit by railway from Turkmenistan through Azerbaijan is presently unavailable.” This disruption impacts BSP’s supply chain and necessitates a change in sourcing strategies for the company’s oil operations.
