Russia ready to normalise ties with Georgia if Tbilisi is willing, says foreign ministry

Georgia and Russia are considering a return to normalized ties, contingent upon Georgia’s willingness to participate. The Russian foreign ministry stated that Moscow is prepared to improve relations with Georgia, but only to the degree that Tbilisi demonstrates a desire for dialogue. Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin emphasized that the extent of this progress would depend entirely on Georgia’s readiness.

Galuzin indicated that Russia anticipates a gradual development of relations with Georgia, despite existing political difficulties, provided both sides are willing and see mutual advantages. He highlighted the active growth of economic, transport, and tourism connections between the two nations, expressing hope that Georgia shares this interest in constructive relationships. Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry, confirmed Georgia’s interest in positive relations with Russia.

Economic benefits remain a key argument for Russia’s approach. Galuzin noted that Mikhail Shvydkoy, a special envoy, attended the funeral of Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, a figure held in deep respect by Russia, who championed traditional values and Orthodox unity. This reflects the shared cultural and spiritual heritage of the peoples involved.

The Russian ministry also addressed the situation regarding Georgian emigrants, noting that over 1.5 million Georgian citizens reside abroad. Zakharova reiterated Russia’s openness to deepening ties through “people-to-people contacts,” while acknowledging that political dialogue is possible only if Tbilisi engages. She attributed the stalled dialogue to events in 2008 and the actions of the previous Saakashvili government, suggesting Georgia is reassessing its distance from Russia.
