The NATO alliance has reviewed its engagement with georgia following the 2024 parliamentary elections and the subsequent events. This assessment was outlined in the NATO Secretary General’s annual report. The report indicated that certain aspects of the Substantial NATO–Georgia Package were re-evaluated, alongside other cooperative efforts.
Despite these adjustments, a significant NATO team remained dedicated to bolstering georgia’s defense capabilities, enhancing its operational capacity, and improving interoperability with the Alliance. Progress continued with the georgian army, notably demonstrated by the successful NATO–Georgia exercise held in May. Seventeen NATO member and partner nations, including France, Germany, Turkey, the UK, and the US, participated in this exercise.
The NATO Liaison Office in Tbilisi maintained active engagement with partners throughout the South Caucasus. The report underscored the region’s importance to NATO’s security, particularly given the ongoing impact of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. It welcomed the initialing of the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, recognizing it as a “major step towards normalisation and regional security.” NATO stands prepared to deepen dialogue and cooperation with both nations.
Furthermore, the report highlighted the discovery by Ukraine’s Security Service of a Hungarian spy, Zoltán Andre, operating undercover in georgia prior to his work in Ukraine.
