Pashinyan and opposition resort to personal insults ahead of elections

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his opponents have engaged in a series of personal challenges and insults ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections in June. Despite the campaign’s official start being delayed, the exchanges began following Pashinyan’s press briefing on March 19th, where he questioned the strength of his main rivals, who present themselves as influential figures from Armenia’s past and future. Pashinyan initially issued a physical challenge, suggesting his opponents attempt 30 pull-ups, while he himself admitted his inability to perform such an action, citing his preference for cycling over 100 kilometers.

He then questioned their intellectual capabilities, urging them to “show their intellect” live and criticizing their analytical thinking and vocabulary, suggesting their strength lay in wealth derived from questionable sources. Pashinyan emphasized the “legitimacy” of his government, asserting it as the greatest strength. He repeatedly challenged his rivals online, including ex-President Robert Kocharyan, tycoons Samvel Karapetyan and Gagik Tsarukyan, demanding they demonstrate their abilities through tasks like writing “ignore” in Armenian.

He proposed a biology challenge, questioning whether they possessed knowledge of lichen. Opposition figures responded with their own assertions of strength, including Samvel Karapetyan, who issued a statement via an AI-generated video despite being under house arrest, and Gagik Tsarukyan’s spokesperson, who rejected being drawn into irrelevant agendas while highlighting Tsarukyan’s arm wrestling achievements. Kocharyan participated in a televised program, criticizing Pashinyan’s viral social media content and emphasizing the seriousness of his campaign.

The exchanges have been characterized by personal attacks and increasingly aggressive rhetoric, mirroring the contentious atmosphere of previous elections. This competitive environment, marked by stunts and insults, reflects the highly competitive and consequential nature of Armenia’s third parliamentary election in five years, with significant implications for the country’s future.
