Moscow accuses Yerevan of ‘destroying traditions’ in its confrontation with Armenian Church

Russian officials strongly criticize the ongoing confrontation between the Armenian government and the Armenian Apostolic Church, deeming it “extremely destructive” and a risk to faith. Maria Zakharova, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, responded to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s remarks regarding the Armenian church, accusing him of politicizing issues of faith and attempting to damage reputations. Zakharova highlighted Pashinyan’s accusations of Armenian clergy collaborating with the USSR KGB, citing declassified documents allegedly showing Archbishop Yezras Nersisyan’s involvement from 1986-1988.

She argued that this behavior was aimed at undermining Armenia’s independence and fostering divisions within the Armenian society. Zakharova criticized Pashinyan’s rhetoric, asserting that labeling the clergy as “KGB agents” was a tactic to gain popularity with pro-Western groups. She warned that such actions could create a dangerous rift in Armenian society, destroying traditions and sowing disbelief.

The Russian Orthodox Church has explicitly accused the Armenian government of engineering a schism within the Armenian church. Amidst upcoming parliamentary elections, tensions between Pashinyan and the Armenian church continue to escalate. Zakharova emphasized the need to address pressing issues of Armenian society rather than focusing on divisive religious debates.

She suggested that the Armenian confrontation with the church was a deliberate diversion, a “bogeyman” to avoid tackling real problems. Furthermore, Zakharova addressed Armenia’s commitment to EU integration, characterizing it as “putting itself in checkmate” and highlighting Armenia’s benefits from its membership in the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). She stressed the impossibility of simultaneous membership in both blocs, citing conflicting norms and regulations.

The Armenian authorities have not yet responded to these accusations. Previous statements from Russian officials urged restraint and highlighted the grave concern regarding attacks on the Armenian Apostolic Church. The situation remains complex, with the Armenian confrontation with the church at the center of diplomatic tensions between Armenia, Russia, and the European Union.
