Shiite Muslims arrested in Azerbaijan as authorities reportedly crack down on hijabs in schools

Azerbaijan authorities have detained several Muslim activists, raising concerns about freedom of religion and due process. Samir Babayev and Alikram Namazov, members of the Azerbaijani Muslim Unity Movement (MUM), were arrested on drug charges following reports of restrictions on religious expression, including bans on hijabs in schools. Babayev, detained in early March, alleges repeated torture and beatings during his custody, detailing instances of being forced into a toilet to deter him from signing an indictment.

His wife reports he faces serious drug charges and a four-month pre-trial detention. Namazov, unreachable since March 11th, also claims police violence and coercion into admitting to drug offenses, particularly concerning his health and living situation. The MUM asserts that these detentions are part of a broader crackdown targeting the group and that schools are enforcing hijab bans, dismissing teachers and students who wear headscarves.

This action, the MUM claims, is driven by a calculated attempt to instill fear amongst believers. As tensions with Iran rise, the situation has become increasingly precarious for Muslim activists in Azerbaijan. Authorities are reportedly resorting to intimidation and false drug accusations to achieve desired outcomes.

The arrests highlight a pattern of alleged abuse and a lack of transparency surrounding legal proceedings. The MUM has called on the Education Ministry to clarify the implementation of these hijab bans, and the situation is generating considerable discussion on social media regarding potential surveillance and targeting of Muslim women. The detentions of these Muslims, coupled with the enforcement of hijab restrictions, reflect a growing concern about human rights within azerbaijan.

The use of fabricated charges and physical abuse raises serious questions about the fairness of the legal system and the potential for further repression against religious minorities.
