Vladikavkaz dance instructor faces harassment for appearing in ‘revealing’ clothes

Diana Pogorelova, a dance instructor from Vladikavkaz, North Ossetia–Alania, is facing intense criticism and insults due to her attire in videos promoting her dance classes. The controversy began with comments on a local online community regarding her “revealing” dance costumes and her Latin American dance style. This quickly escalated, attracting widespread attention across numerous social media platforms and international audiences, with over 300,000 followers on her personal page and 80,000 subscribers to her dance school’s channel.

Critics compared Pogorelova and her students to sex workers, urging local officials to intervene, arguing that “girls in Ossetia should not behave this way.” In response, Pogorelova issued a statement, asserting she wouldn’t engage with the insults but threatened legal action, specifically mentioning complaints of incitement to hatred, harassment, or humiliation based on appearance or nationality. She vowed to pursue legal action against those inciting such behavior. A local blogger, Zaur Farniev, highlighted the overall discussion, questioning the direction of “beautiful Ossetia” and criticizing attempts to imitate external influences.

He argued that progress requires freedom, regardless of personal preferences, and questioned the judgment of those prioritizing an outdated image over development. Another blogger, Fred-As Betanti, further criticized Pogorelova and those perceived as lacking moral standards, questioning the preservation of Ossetian culture and the adoption of Western fashion. He expressed frustration with perceived disrespect and accusations of backwardness, questioning the behavior of current generations and their connection to the traditions of their ancestors.

Pogorelova has declined to comment to OC Media. The situation highlights tensions surrounding cultural expression and personal freedoms within North Ossetia–Alania.
