The Georgian opposition has initiated a nationwide mobilization effort, culminating in a major demonstration on May 26th, Georgia’s Independence Day. An alliance of opposition parties within Georgia announced this campaign on March 31st. The initiative, formally outlined in a political strategy and code of conduct, was presented by Zurab Japaridze, leader of Girchi — More Freedom.
He selected March 31st, 1991, the date of the referendum restoring Georgia’s independence, as a symbolic launch date, alongside May 26th, 1918, when the nation initially declared its sovereignty. Both dates represent crucial moments in Georgia’s historical struggle for statehood. This opposition alliance believes Georgia currently faces a comparable challenge.
The campaign’s purpose is to foster widespread public involvement, strengthening direct connections with citizens and challenging what they perceive as government misinformation. It seeks to convert public protests and demands for reform into tangible political action, dispel fear, and boost participation in the movement. The two-month campaign will conclude with the planned rally in Tbilisi.
The alliance has established a unified strategy and shared operational guidelines. They are appealing to other political and civic organizations, alongside active citizens, to participate. The statement acknowledges those “held captive by the regime” and expresses gratitude to individuals involved in ongoing protests throughout Georgia.
“We guarantee no simple solutions or immediate results, but we are certain: inaction will maintain the status quo. Action, however, will inevitably lead to a change of power, a process that will ultimately be both feasible and necessary,” the alliance declared.
