Massive crowds gather to give final farewell to Georgia’s longest-serving Patriarch

The passing of Ilia II evoked a profound farewell for Georgia, marking the end of a nearly half-century leadership by the nation’s longest-serving patriarch. Mikheil Gvadzabia reported on March 22nd that immense crowds gathered to honor the deceased at Tbilisi’s Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba), where the final rites were conducted. Ilia II, who died at 93, was interred initially at Sioni Cathedral in the old town, a location he had served from 1977 until 2004.

The extensive funeral ceremony began within Sameba, with the patriarch’s body lying in repose before the transfer. Senior clergy, government officials, and representatives from around the world joined the mourners, including a delegation from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople led by Patriarch Bartholomew I. Metropolitan Shio Mujiri, poised to lead the Church following Ilia II, delivered the funeral rite alongside the patriarch.

Bartholomew I described Ilia II as a “caring and loving father,” emphasizing his dedication to spiritual guidance and societal progress. Tens of thousands amassed, holding candles and flowers, lining the route to Sioni Cathedral. Soldiers formed a protective corridor, while clergy carried portraits of the patriarch.

The government implemented measures including free public transport and a national mourning period, reflecting the widespread respect for Ilia II. Access to Sameba was initially unrestricted, resulting in lengthy queues, but limited passes were later issued. Tamar Bobokhidze, traveling from Bolnisi, expressed her deep connection to the patriarch’s legacy, stating he remained a guiding influence.

The event occurred amidst ongoing political unrest in Georgia, highlighting Ilia II’s enduring status as a trusted figure. His influence on the Church’s growth, particularly during the Soviet era, was also a prominent topic of discussion, with many recalling a time when religious expression was restricted. The patriarch’s death underscored a collective farewell and a poignant moment for the nation.
