Georgian Patriarch Ilia II hospitalised

The Georgian patriarch, Ilia II, was transferred to intensive care on Tuesday following a sudden health decline. A medical council was assembled to evaluate his condition, which remains critically serious. The Georgian Orthodox Patriarchate announced ilia’s hospitalization due to a deterioration in his health early that morning.

Officials stated the situation is challenging, though stable, and they requested public prayers. Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze confirmed ilia was admitted to the Caucasus Medical Centre in Tbilisi with a stomach ulcer causing internal bleeding. The bleeding was successfully stopped, but the situation remains gravely serious and demands constant monitoring.

Numerous high-ranking officials visited the clinic alongside Sarjveladze, including Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, President Mikheil Kavelashvili, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, and the head of the State Security Service of Georgia, Mamuka Mdinaradze. Kobakhidze affirmed the state’s commitment to providing the utmost care for ilia’s health. Opposition figures, including representatives from For Georgia and the United National Movement, also expressed concern.

Germany’s ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, extended his wishes for a swift recovery. A medical council convened at midday, with the center’s director, Sopo Aspandize, describing ilia’s condition as still serious. He is 93 years old and has served as the head of the georgian orthodox church since 1977.

Hourly tests are being conducted on the patriarch.
