Court sentences Chechens over shooting near Wildberries office

A Moscow court found several chechens guilty of hooliganism and violence following a shooting near the Wildberries office in central Moscow in 2024. The incident, described by authorities as a “conflict between a group of men,” involved six defendants sentenced to varying terms of imprisonment. Dzhabrail Umaev and Murad Mazhiev received one year and seven months, while others received sentences of two years and four months, with some also convicted of property damage motivated by hooliganism.

All are expected to be released in April, considering time spent in pre-trial detention. The investigation into a suspected murder case involving a chechen man, Umar Chichaev, a bodyguard of MP Adam Delimkhanov, was suspended due to his involvement in the ongoing war in Ukraine. Simultaneously, Chechen bloggers reported Chichaev’s location in Chechnya, despite his listed contract with the Akhmat regiment.

The original incident, which occurred in September 2024 near the Kremlin, involved dozens of people, including security officers and a businessperson. Over 30 individuals were initially detained, facing charges ranging from murder to assault. The case was subsequently narrowed to focus on the hooliganism and vigilantism aspects, with most original suspects securing contracts to fight in Ukraine and avoiding prosecution.

The shooting occurred amidst a corporate dispute between Wildberries’ founders, Tatyana Kim and Vladislav Bakalchuk, fueled by tensions over control of the company. Kerimov, Kadyrov, and Barakhoev were all involved in the dispute. Following a court ruling in April 2025, Kim gained full control of Wildberries.

Amidst heightened tensions, Bakalchuk arrived with security personnel, leading to accusations of attempted seizure. Two individuals died, and several were injured. Kadyrov subsequently threatened blood feuds against Kerimov and Barakhoev, prompting a reported $1.9 billion payment to him orchestrated by Putin’s approval.

These events underscore the complex interplay of business disputes, regional politics, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine within the North Caucasus region.
