Former pro-Russian Moldovan president Igor Dodon arrives in Georgia

Igor Dodon, the former pro-Russian Moldovan president, recently traveled to Tbilisi, Georgia. Accompanied by a group of opposition parliamentarians, the visit was presented as a step to enhance “parliamentary collaboration.” The arrival has already sparked political responses and some criticism. Dodon stated his presence in Tbilisi is a working trip, part of his role within the Moldova-Georgia parliamentary friendship group.

He emphasized that the journey, occurring at Georgia’s invitation, seeks to reinforce connections between the two nations, specifically within the legislative sphere. Bogdan Tsyrdya, a Socialist Party MP and co-chair of the friendship group, leads the delegation. The group includes representatives from various opposition parties, creating a multi-party approach.

The “Patriots for Europe in Congress” group, formed in Strasbourg and joined by Georgia’s ruling party, prioritizes sovereignty in its messaging. The visit encompasses the inaugural meeting of the Moldova-Georgia friendship group, alongside consultations with the Georgian parliament speaker and diverse political representatives. Dodon highlighted the goal of deepening cooperation and identifying new possibilities.

Moldovan NGO WatchDog.MD, a prominent organization combating disinformation and corruption, has released portions of the visit’s schedule, noting that some delegation members are recognized for their pro-Russian viewpoints. A Council of Europe resolution, titled “Local democracy in Georgia under threat,” addresses high political division and one-party control over local governance. Igor dodon, who held the presidential office from 2016 to 2020, is frequently linked to Moscow and a pro-Russian stance.

Georgian officials have yet to publicly comment on dodon’s arrival and the accompanying delegation.
