Georgian company to buy sanctioned coal from Russian-occupied Ukraine

A Georgian company, George Oil Ltd., has finalized an agreement to import coal and other materials subject to Western sanctions originating from the russian-occupied Ukrainian region of Donetsk. Valerian Kochiashvili, the company’s owner, confirmed the deals to Georgian media, stating the coal would be utilized domestically in Georgia alongside sales to India and Turkey. Initial reports emerged from local media within the occupied region, with Kremlin-installed official Andrei Chertkov announcing the agreement in March.

Chertkov described the arrangement as a preliminary step toward sustained trade relations, viewing it as a chance to broaden sales and bolster the economic standing of the russian-occupied area. Kochiashvili openly discussed the transactions with Georgian outlets, expressing optimism about the “negotiable” agreement. He made provocative statements, including a veiled threat against the Georgian Dream party, suggesting consequences if they did not support the venture.

Kochiashvili anticipates exports beginning by the end of April, emphasizing the need for rapid connections to alleviate logistical challenges. He asserted that establishing ties with russia, considering them neighbors, is crucial for Georgia’s economic well-being. He also expressed interest in expanding trade to include goods like food and salt, referencing the devastated city of Soledar.

Kochiashvili downplayed concerns about potential sanctions, stating he hadn’t yet initiated any problematic actions. This activity follows previous controversies, including a fine levied against Kochiashvili for publicly insulting a German Ambassador. The Georgian Foreign Ministry has not yet responded to inquiries regarding these deals.

The situation highlights the complex dynamics surrounding trade and sanctions within the context of the ongoing russian invasion of Ukraine and the occupation of Ukrainian territories.
