Azerbaijani man detained on charges of blackmailing Aliyev family

Azerbaijan’s State Security Service (DTX) has detained a man, identified only as F.S., on accusations of blackmailing members of the Aliyev family. The investigation centers around a demand for €5 million ($5.8 million) to prevent the release of intimate videos involving Alyona Aliyeva, the daughter-in-law of President Ilham Aliyev. The DTX released a video detailing how bloggers, including Mehman Huseynov and Gabil Mammadov, had disseminated defamatory statements about Aliyeva, alleging she operated as an escort and met her husband, Heydar Aliyev Jr., through that activity.

F.S. reportedly contacted Huseynov’s social media page, Sanjaq Media, seeking Aliyeva’s footage, subsequently receiving claims of additional videos from Elman Aliyev and Mammadzaki Salimov, both residing in Europe. Despite initial skepticism, F.S.

then messaged Mehriban Aliyeva, Ilham Aliyev’s wife and Azerbaijan’s Vice President, along with their daughters Arzu and Leyla Aliyeva. Following a lack of response on February 18th, he contacted Javid Gurbanov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport, ultimately demanding money. Elman Aliyev publicly shared a video on YouTube, asserting that the involved man was Russian citizen Farid Salmanov, a figure known for criticizing the Azerbaijani government.

Salmanov, operating a YouTube channel and social media pages, has been linked to the incident through shared attire with the man featured in the DTX video. Meyman Huseynov refuted the DTX’s allegations, stating he had no contact with F.S. and that his published materials were unrelated to the blackmail claims.

The investigation highlights a complex situation involving allegations of leaked intimate material and potential connections to individuals critical of the Aliyev regime.
