Turkish commander says Turkey ‘ready to provide military assistance’ to Azerbaijan

The commander of Turkey’s Land Forces, Metin Tokel, recently visited the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, signaling Turkey’s readiness to offer military support to Azerbaijan. He stated that Turkey would provide assistance aligned with the Shusha Declaration, a mutual defense agreement established in June 2021 between turkey and azerbaijan. This visit, occurring amidst heightened regional tensions due to the ongoing conflict in Iran, underscores the importance of the alliance.

Both Ankara and Baku have voiced accusations of Iranian attacks on their territories. The Shusha Declaration emphasizes a continued commitment to stability and security within the Caucasus region, acknowledging the unique geographic circumstances of Nakhchivan. During the meeting with Azerbaijani Combined Arms Army Commander Kanan Seyidov, the sides engaged in a thorough discussion of shared interests.

Tokel affirmed turkey’s unwavering support for azerbaijan, highlighting the strong strategic and military partnership between the two nations. The visit included honoring former leaders Heydar Aliyev and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, further solidifying the relationship. Amendments to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic’s constitution, finalized last June, were also discussed, reflecting the ongoing cooperation between turkey and azerbaijan.

The commander’s actions demonstrate turkey’s dedication to bolstering azerbaijan’s defense capabilities.
