Chair of Georgian Dream parliamentary faction on relations with NATO: ‘We listened to empty promises’

The Georgian Dream’s parliamentary chair, Shalva Papuashvili, commented on nato-georgia relations, stating that reports regarding georgia in nato’s 2025 assessment primarily reflect internal challenges within the alliance rather than georgia’s own actions. The report detailed nato’s review of its partnership with georgia following the 2024 elections, including adjustments to the NATO-Georgia Substantial Package and revised priorities. Despite these changes, cooperation with the Georgian Defence Forces persists, evidenced by joint exercises in May.

NATO’s liaison office in Tbilisi maintains active engagement within the South Caucasus. Papuashvili deflected responsibility for the issues highlighted, asserting that nato should re-evaluate its policy since 2008, considering georgia and ukraine’s circumstances. He expressed frustration, stating, “We listened to empty promises, put ourselves at risk, and received nothing in return.”

Papuashvili argued that the current conflict has exposed the true cost of this cooperation, noting the absence of nato troops in ukraine.

He believes nato’s difficulties extend beyond georgia, citing similar criticism within the united states regarding the alliance’s response to partner efforts. “Given how much georgia has done for nato by participating in various missions, we do not see an adequate response,” he concluded, emphasizing that final decisions rest with the alliance. The european commission identifies georgia as a crucial transit link between asia and europe, the “middle corridor.”
