Two Ingush men sentenced to life imprisonment over Crocus City Hall terror attack

The Moscow Western District Military Court has handed down life sentences to 15 individuals involved in the devastating terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall concert venue in the Moscow region. This occurred on 22 March 2024, resulting in the tragic deaths of 150 people, including six children, and injuries to over 600. Among those receiving life imprisonment are two men originating from Ingushetia, Huseyn Medov and Dzhabrail Aushev.

Investigators determined that Shamsidin Fariduni, Dalerjon Mirzoev, Muhammadsobir Faizov, Saidokrami Rachabalizoda, and Shahromjon Gadoev were directly responsible for the assault, operating as part of Wilayat Khorasan, a branch of the Islamic State. The court found evidence linking these individuals to the attack, alongside other defendants including citizens of Tajikistan. Furthermore, Huseyn Medov and Dzhabrail Aushev were convicted of complicity, specifically for providing coordinates to the attackers’ weapons cache.

Aushev attempted suicide while in pre-trial detention, reportedly due to prolonged depression. Investigations revealed connections to the Batalhadzhins, a closed Ingush religious brotherhood with approximately 20,000 members, tracing its roots back to a Sufi sheikh. This brotherhood, historically linked to Chechnya, has faced increased scrutiny following the 2019 killing of Ibragim Eldzharkiev.

Other defendants received lengthy prison terms, including Alisher Kasimov, who rented out a flat to the accused, and the Islomov brothers, who provided a vehicle used after the crime. The Russian Investigative Committee continues its investigation, pursuing leads regarding the attack’s organizers. The Crocus City Hall incident remains a significant event, and the search for those involved continues.
