OSCE Parliamentary Assembly calls on Georgia’s political forces to restore dialogue

The osce parliamentary assembly concluded a visit to georgia, expressing serious concerns regarding the lack of political dialogue within the country. The delegation highlighted this absence as a significant obstacle to stability and the resolution of georgia’s challenges. They voiced deep worry over recently adopted legislation, noting its broad scope threatens citizen participation in public and political life.

During the multi-day visit, the osce delegation engaged with key figures including the chair of the georgian dream party, the speaker of parliament, the prime minister, and various ministers, alongside representatives from opposition parties, civil society, and the diplomatic corps. Despite recognizing the impressive political figures present, the delegation stressed the critical need for direct communication and constructive interaction. Osce Parliamentary Assembly President Pere Joan Pons Sampietro emphasized the importance of all sides engaging, particularly the authorities, to restore dialogue.

He acknowledged a broad consensus on european integration but warned that sharp political polarization remains a substantial impediment. Special Representative Luis Graça echoed these concerns, stating that political and social polarization prevents georgia from fully realizing its potential and urged cooperation from georgia’s political leaders. The osce delegation also addressed concerns about potential restrictions on opposition parties and emphasized the responsibility of georgian society and its leaders to resolve internal political issues.

They called for responsible steps to reduce escalation and return to genuine dialogue, acknowledging international organizations can only facilitate the process, not resolve internal crises. The osce will continue its engagement with georgia, including election observation and parliamentary cooperation, reviewing the visit’s outcomes at future meetings.
