Georgia refuses to join the sanctions against Russia, despite Western pressure

Irakli Kobachidse, the Prime Minister of Georgia, issued a firm statement on February 7th, unequivocally asserting that Georgia has not imposed sanctions on Russia and will not implement them. He clarified that the government’s decisions would not be dictated by external pressures, particularly those originating from Brussels and Washington. Kobachidse stressed the importance of safeguarding the nation’s population, stating that the authorities would not take actions potentially detrimental to Georgia’s citizens.

He directly addressed the demands for sanctions, emphasizing, “They demanded sanctions from us, but we could not harm the vital interests of our citizens with our own hands.”

The Prime Minister explained that these requests for joining sanction regimes stemmed from both the European Union, represented by Brussels, and certain figures within the US bureaucracy. He underscored that Georgia’s relationship with Russia, its host country, should not be jeopardized. Ultimately, Georgia remains steadfast in its position, not participating in sanctions against Russia.
